2016 America’s Parents of the Year Named

Washington, D.C. – The National Parents Day Coalition and the National Selection Committee named the 2016 America’s Parents of the Year, Lowell and America Callahan from Wheatland, California who were nominated by Bob and Maree Gauper from the same state.

The Callahans, who have been married for 37 years, have fostered special needs children (adopting four of them) and raised seven biological children. They are advocates for parents of children with special needs and assist Spanish-speaking families in accessing community resources and provide translation when necessary. They are devout members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and live their faith by caring for less fortunate people.

National Parents’ Day was proclaimed as a federal national holiday in 1994, after Dr. Hak Jan Han Moon proposed its creation before the U.S. Senate one year prior. President Bill Clinton approved the House Joint Resolution 398, declaring every fourth Sunday of July as a recurring and perennial day of commemoration. The 22nd annual Parents’ Day banquet, organized by the Parents Day Coalition headed by the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) USA, the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) USA, the American Clergy Leadership Conference (ACLC), the Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP) USA, and The Washington Times Foundation (TWTF), was held on August 5, 2016 at the Arbor Ballroom of The Washington Times in Washington, D.C., where over 250 people gathered to honor finalists and recipients of the National Parents of the Year Award.

Awardees came from all around the nation, as far as Hawaii, and from a diverse range of religious and ethnic backgrounds. Some honorees brought their children and grandchildren, and were celebrated together, as exemplary families with parents who have demonstrated incredible sacrifice, love and virtue in raising their children and community.

“I am amazed to see such a rich array of different races and religions represented here tonight, which I did not expect and also don’t see in other places,” said Nabeela Ahmed, a Parents of the Year award nominee from Maryland. “It’s great that what brings everyone together and unites everyone is the common vision of family love and family values.”

The venue was beautifully decorated and provided tremendous dignity to the twelve top finalists for the National Parents of the Year, who are listed below. Nine of the couples attended the banquet.

  • Pastor Mark and Edna Abernathy (Georgia)
  • Lowell and America Callahan (California)
  • Apostle Ralph L. Edwards and Prophetess Irene Edwards (New York)
  • Kenneth and Kim Fox-Muhammad (North Carolina)
  • Sen. Mike and Carol Gabbard (Hawaii)
  • Daniel and Lakeisha Meadows Ivey (North Carolina)
  • Pastor Bill and Faye McDonnell (Nevada)
  • Bishop Alfred A., Jr. and Dr. Susie C. Owens (Washington, D.C.)
  • Andrew and Rebecca Powell (West Virginia)

Mr. Larry Moffitt, Vice President of The Washington Times Foundation, emceed the program. To open the evening, Ms. Lubana Al Quntar, designated First Lady of Opera in her homeland of Syria sang the national anthem, and Barbara Moseley-Marks, Executive Director of UPF Virginia, gave a very moving invocation. A buffet dinner was then served, during which more musical selections were performed by Ms. Al Quntar.

Angelika Selle, President of WFWP USA, shared a few words recognizing the sponsoring organizations and the national selection committee for the Parents of the Year Award. Afterward, Rev. Tom Cutts, Executive Director of ACLC, gave an overview of the history of Parents’ Day.

“The Founders of our country recognized the importance of virtue,” he said. “I believe that the establishment of Parents’ Day takes the American experiment one step further toward the Constitutional Ideal of our Founders.  Not only does society require good morality, and public virtue, but we also need true and loving parents. Today, we are celebrating more than just fatherhood and motherhood.  I have heard it said that the best gift a father can give his child is to love the child’s mother.  So, tonight we are also celebrating husbands and wives, and healthy marriages.”

After this message, Richard de Sena, President of UPF USA, shared a report on local Parents’ Day programs that happened across America to celebrate and express gratitude for all outstanding parents. He also gave an overview of Parents’ Day plans for the upcoming years. Several speakers gave congratulatory remarks, including FFWPU North America Continental Chairman, Dr. Ki Hoon Kim.

Tom McDevitt, Chairman of UPF USA, introduced the finalists for the 2016 National Parents of the Year award. Each couple and family was greeted onstage with rousing applause, as they receive their plaques of recognition and gifts. In response, three couples also shared brief words of gratitude to the organizers.

“What moved me most and brought me to tears were the individual stories of the awardees unique life experiences and accomplishments as told in their introductions,” said Stanley Marks.

Attendee Roberto Turconi said, “I was very inspired by the testimony of every honor recipient, about how they used their role as parents to help other less fortunate people, and how they used their time, resources and energy to build a better world.”

In addition to the Parents of the Year Award, the Legislator Parents of the Year Award was presented to Hon. Mike and Carol Gabbard; the Excellence in Parenting and Community Leadership Award was presented to Andrew and Rebecca Powell, Kenneth and Kim Fox-Muhammad, Andrew and Judith Ross, Phengchanh and Wilaiwan Soundara, David and Lakeisha Meadows-Ivey (not present), and Dr. John and Lead Schaut (not present); and the Excellence in Parenting and Pastoral Leadership Award was presented to Pastor Mark and First Lady Edna Abernathy, Apostle Ralph and Prophetess Irene Edwards, Bishop Alfred Owens, Jr. and Dr. Susan Owens, and Pastor Billy and Faye McDonell (not present).

“Seeing everyone’s face with either a big smile or tears of joy made all the work we did, starting from the nomination process, to the selection and finally to the awards celebration, all worth it,” said Emiljun Rapada of UPF USA. “It was an honor to celebrate with these exemplary couples who genuinely gave and sacrifice everything for their families and community.”

Banquet attendee, Sevil Kalayci, said, “It was an inspiring night surrounded by wonderful people who love their families. I never knew there was a day set aside to recognize outstanding parents from around the country. It’s good to see an organization that promotes families and family values. Good parents should be recognized.”

In closing, Dr. Michael Balcomb, President of FFWPU USA gave a dynamic call to action inviting everyone to the upcoming 40th anniversary celebration of the Washington Monument Rally (September 17 in Washington, D.C.) and Peace Road rally. Archbishop George Augustus Stallings, Jr. Co-chairman of ACLC, gave closing remarks and a prayer. He urged the audience to make America parenting again.

“Congratulations to UPF USA for an exceptionally powerful and emotionally moving evening celebrating National Parents Day,” said Jan Du Plain, a banquet attendee. “The selection of honorees from around the nation was extraordinary, and each honoree’s story was special, inspiring us to each love more, serve more and be the best parents possible. Thank you UPF for once again being at the forefront of one of the most important movements in the world—restoring God-centered families in our society.”

Governor Sandoval Proclaimed July 24th as Parents Day in Nevada

Las Vegas, NV – Parents Day 2016 was celebrated on July 31st at the International Peace Education Center. Pictures of the families celebrated were displayed on the large screen as the families arrived. There were children as well as grandparents. Pictures were taken of the families at the fountain, as they arrived. Flower corsages made with loving hands by 2 sisters were given to each parent and speaker. One Ambassador for Peace made balloon animals for the children.

Japanese drums were playing upstairs to call people to the ballroom for the start of the program. All the tables filled up. There was not an empty seat in the place, altogether 120 participants. Dr. Ki Hoon Kim, Chairman, UPF North America, Dr. Michael Balcomb, President, FFWPU-USA, Rev. Richard De Sena, President UPF-USA, Rev. Ken Doo, Senior Pastor Las Vegas Family Church and Rev. Zagery Oliver, UPF USA Ambassador to Africa and Caribbean were present to give support to our event. There were beautiful programs prepared that had articles of each participating family, with the logos of all 10 organizations participating and nominating parents.

After a beautiful prayer offered by an elder Muslim man, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by a father and daughter together. There was sharing and conversation as people lined up for a delicious buffet dinner. The program started with a beautiful acapella singing of the Star Spangled Banner by Kinesha McDaniel. She sang beautifully with much heart and hit all the right notes followed by a beautiful Gospel Hymn sung acapella by 3 Choir from our honored parents’ church of Rev. Bill and Faye McDonnell.

Katherine Duncan and Leslie Rigney greeted the guests, emphasizing we are all here as one family under God. A proclamation was given by Governor Brian Sandoval of the state of Nevada proclaiming July 24th as Parents Day in the state and the content was read by Richard DeSena who later spoke about Parents Day as a designated day celebrated every year and how important it is to recognize good parents in our communities. He praised Katherine Duncan for attending a 7 day Divine Principle Workshop, and encouraged everyone to do so! He then introduced Dr. Ki Hoon Kim. Dr. Kim gave a wonderful message to the families about True Parents (my parents, he said!) and about the family centered on God being the starting point of the Kingdom of Heaven. He spoke of ownership and taking responsibility in our families, our communities, our schools and government. It was very well received by everyone.

A video was shown with the children from each family speaking about their parents and how much they appreciated them and what they did for them. Some were little children, others were teenagers, and another a middle aged man who appreciated his father still giving to others, even with Alzheimer’s. One brother, so inspired by Father’s words, offered his time and effort to make the videos without compensation, at a sacrifice to himself.

Awards and gifts were then given to each parent couple. Each couple came on the stage to receive their Certification of Recognition with their children and a family picture was taken. After each family received their certificates, a group picture of all recipients with the children in front, holding the banner

In the effort of UPF Las Vegas to bridge the divide in the faith community, we successfully brought together representatives of the Mayor’s Faith Initiative, The Interfaith Council of Southern Nevada and the Churches of Southern Nevada.

The program ended with wonderful Japanese Drums by a group of 4 ladies. Participants spoke with each other, had more pictures taken downstairs, while visiting. Some gathered around the piano where a wonderful piano player/tenor played and sang joyful Italian songs. The music reverberated throughout the hall! May Heavenly Parent be comforted by these happy families, and our sharing this evening together!

[widgetkit id=”135″ name=”2016 Parents Day in WDC”]

Washington, D.C. – On Sunday, July 24th, UPF USA – Washington DC office held a National Parents Day program at the Founder’s Room of The Washington Times.

The establishment of Parents’ Day was the result of the efforts of a bipartisan, multiracial and interfaith coalition of religious, civic and elected leaders who recognized the need to promote responsible parenting in our society and to uplift ideal parental role models, especially for our nation’s children. The celebration in July of Parents Day would build and expand on the celebrations of Mothers Day in May and Father’s Day and June.

A Congressional Resolution that was signed into law on October 14, 1994 by President Clinton determined that the fourth Sunday of every July would be a national holiday to honor the crucial role of all parents in supporting the life of the nation.

Included among the 54 attendees and UPF supporters at the UPF USA – Washington DC office National Parents Day program were some special guests: H.E. Thelma Patricia Phillip Browne, Ambassador of St. Kitts and Naves; Grand Sufi Sahibzada Riaz Sultan, a direct descendant of a great Sufi of Subcontinent of Pakistan; and previous National Parents Day awardees from 2002, Minister and Mrs. Amar Nath Gupta and from 2003, Dr. and Mrs. Zulfiqar Kazmi.

In her welcoming remarks Mrs. Tomiko Duggan, Executive Director, UPF USA – Washington, DC Office, presented the historical background and vision behind the commemoration of National Parents Day. In recognizing the official support for 2016 Parents Day holiday from congressional offices and government officials, she referred to UPF Founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s frequent holding up the ideal of the family as the “School of Love” and as a training ground for the character of future generations. She said “Today is a day to honor our parents and rededicate our commitment to raise children by manifesting the highest standard of unconditional true love so that children will know they are loved by, nurtured, and protected, and will continue that tradition in creating their own good families.”

Mrs. Mabrouka “Mimi” Hassanein, Senior Fellow and Middle Eastern Community Liaison in Montgomery County, Maryland was an energetic, embracing and inspirational keynote speaker. Mrs. Hassanein, emigrated from Egypt 40 years and became the first Muslim woman to become a councilmember in Montgomery County. She shared her life experience and education into American culture as a mother who discovered the surprising nuances of American life and culture through her involvement in volunteering for her children’s schools and support of the local PTA

Following the keynote speaker was the ceremonial recognition of new UPF Ambassadors for Peace. They are the following: Mabrouka Hassanein, Senior Fellow and Middle Eastern Community Liaison for Montgomery County; Grand Sufi Sahibzada Riaz Sultan, a direct descendant of a great Sufi of Subcontinent of Pakistan; Mimoza Dajci, President, “Peace and Love”; and Fawzia Etemadi, Member , Afghanistan High Peace Council and Organizer for “Sport for Peace” in Afghanistan

After Mrs. Nanae Goto offered songs “You Raised Me Up” and “God Bless America”, the program concluded with the recognition that National Parents Day provides an opportunity to express gratitude and appreciation to all parents for their selfless commitment to raising healthy children and the accompanying lifelong commitment to nurturing relationships with others.

Parents Day 2016 In Chicago

20160731CH PANO2

20160731CH PANO1

Chicago, IL – The state of Illinois chose Andrew & Judith Ross as its national nominees for 2016’s parents of the Year, however UPF-USA took a much different route for its local Parents Day program which was held on Sunday, July 24th.

Feeling that over the years Illinois has chosen outstanding nominees from the political, educational and religious fields, UPF-USA decided to look for the trees in the forest of outstanding parents—in other words members of its own Chicago Family Church.  These parents may not have the same credentials as 2014’s National Parents of the Year Couple, Dr. Willie and Sherrilynne Weston, but many of them has demonstrated over 40 years of faith since 1976’s Yankee Stadium & Washington Monument Rallies by UPF Founder, Rev.  Sun Myung Moon. Likewise, while Illinois has chosen a Catholic Nun (Parent to hundreds of her Catholic School Students), a couple chosen personally by Illinois Secretary of State and Parents Day Committee member Jesse White and one of Illinois most prestigious ministers, Dr. & Mrs. Stephen Thurston as Parents of the Year over the years, 2016 called for something even extra special.

After FFWPU District Pastor Rev. Jeffrey Schmitt shared the words of Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, UPF Co-founder, on the Yankee Stadium 40th anniversary celebration in June and Rosia Kittel-Schmitt, daughter of Dr. Robert & Therese Kittel, Director of Education – UPF Asia, shared about the incredible activities currently taking place in Nepal, it was time to honor Chicago’s most outstanding parents.

Newly appointed UPF Illinois State President, Mr. John Healy gave a brief explanation of the Parents Day holiday and displayed the beautiful Parents Day Proclamation signed by the Hon. Bruce Rauner, the Governor of Illinois. Then Midwestern UPF-USA Regional Director, Rev Bruce Sutchar shared about a few the our state’s past winners and then proceeded to invite every parent in the auditorium to join him on stage to receive their own personalized “Parents of the Year” certificate.

The group then sang Happy Parents Day to each other and then Happy Parents Day to our beloved True Parents.

UPF Missouri Honors Three Exemplary Parents

Rev. Quarells giving sermon   Mel & Brenda Quarells

Maryland Heights, MO
– On July 24, 2016 the Missouri Chapter of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) in partnership with Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) celebrated Parents Day at the Missouri Peace Family Church at 2280 McKelvey Road. Rev. Meldon Quarells, a new friend of UPF and one of the award recipients, offered a sermon which focused upon the Family Pledge.  He testified to how Rev. Moon offer a higher standard of Christianity that we should all strive for.  At one point Rev. Quarells even lamented that most Christians desire to leave this evil world and meet Jesus on “the other side” when they should really be directing their energy toward serving God directly by attending His son and daughter, the True Parents, here on earth.

Allen, Beth, and Benroy Shimotani   Group Photo

At the conclusion of the worship service a short celebration was held in which Rev. and Mrs. Quarells and two couples from the FFWPU received awards and recognition which honored their purity in marriage and devotion to God’s ideal of families of true love.  Rev. Quarells’ sister introduced him as being the person that held their family together through many challenges as they were growing up.  She gave a very heart-felt testimony that he and his wife were always there for her as she was raising her own children.  There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

Allen and Beth Shimotani were introduced by one of their three sons, Benroy, who is himself blessed in marriage and a graduate student.  Benroy testified how much of a positive influence that his parents had on his decision to service the public as a city manager by studying for the profession of Public Administration.

Kim and Mary Bratti, another couple and former Missouri State Leader, were introduced by Rev. Earlice Wrice, who is one of the first members to join FFWPU in St Louis in 1969.  Kim was unable to attend but his wife, Mary, accepted the award for their family that has two daughters.  Adonia Hentrichs, the current state co-pastor of Denver CO, is one of their daughters who has four of her own children.

The event was attended by thirty-seven people. A lot of hearts were touched and much love was shared as we continued the tradition of recognizing God centered families on Parents Day.

Parents’ Day Celebration in Washington State

IMG_2188 (2)

Seattle, WA – Over 130 persons gathered at the Windermere Mansion overlooking Lake Washington, in NE Seattle last Sunday, July 24th to celebrate “Parents’ Day in Washington State 2016”. It was an ecumenical event to be sure, attended by folks from many backgrounds and nations.

The weather was warm, and the atmosphere warmer in conviviality as we proceeded through our program, including the singing of America the Beautiful led by local singer Brian Granstrom, our invocation given by Mr. Bert Caoili, an Ambassador For Peace and past District Governor of the Lions Club International, District 19-B. This was followed by some notes on the history of Parents’ Day in the USA by UPF WA State Executive Director Ray McCready, including the part played by Dr. Hakja Han Moon and the American Family Coalition, and then a stirring speech by an Ambassador for Peace and Parents of the Year awardee in 2015, Mr. David Rogers. The title of his speech was “The Vales that True Parents Show and Share”. His speech included 21 points on the value to society, our nation and world of parents and parenting.

Our able emcee, Mrs. Emma Herron, an AFP and local political activist, kept us on beat and shared a wonderful poem highlighting parenting. Two choirs offered songs, which attendees joined in with.

We culminated our event by presenting Parents of the Year awards to 6 couples and their families. These included 2 couples married over 50 years, another couple married 47 years, a couple from Nepal, a couple from Japan and a couple from Kenya, who works with the Youth Education Network there, and runs an academy for orphans and disadvantaged youth in rural Kenya.

Following the taking of group photos, we enjoyed a delicious Bar-B-Q, put on by volunteers from the Seattle Family Church. With a great view of Lake Washington, Mount Rainier and the great weather, it was a thoroughly enjoyable time for all in attendance.

Washington D.C. – The annual National Parents’ Day Awarding and Celebration 2016 will be held on the 5th of August at the Arbor Ballroom, The Washington Times from 6:00-8:30pm. The event will feature a delicious banquet dinner, entertainment, and speakers that will properly honor the Parents of the Year finalists and winners.

National Parents’ Day became law in 1994, when President Bill Clinton established the Fourth Sunday of July as a recurring and perennial day of commemoration.  Since then, churches and community groups across the country have held annual activities designed to celebrate and strengthen families and to honor outstanding parents in their communities.

The genesis of this took place one year earlier on July 28, 1993, when Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, as Co-Founder and Chairwoman of the Women’s Federation for World Peace, addressed members of the U.S. Congress on Capitol Hill. She was introduced by Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah. The day had been proclaimed “True Parents’ Day” by Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi, who in his designation statement urged his “colleagues in the U.S. Senate, and all citizens of our Nation to recognize and support True Parents Day and the restoration of God-centered families in our society.”

All fifty states are enjoined to send their representative couples through the different sponsoring organizations such as the American Clergy Leadership Conference (ACLC); Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) USA; The Washington Times Foundation (TWTF); Universal Peace Federation (UPF) USA and the Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP) USA. To nominate someone, please follow this online nominations and the deadline is on July 11th.

This is the time to recognize and celebrate the very best people you know who have given sacrificially of their lives, including their time, financial and emotional resources, and more, to fulfill that uniquely special and God-given role of being a father and mother.

The criteria for Parents’ Day nominations include: Exemplifying qualities of sacrificial love; Overcame major obstacles (emotional, physical, financial, etc.) to provide for the personal development and happiness of children; Exhibited qualities of personal moral virtue and/or religious commitment; and a noteworthy record of contributions to the family and community.

The National Selection Committee will process the nominations and select the finalists who will be then receiving the awards on the said date.
